    - Sure, my use of the phrase “central authority figure” inadvertently conjures the notion of the people yearning to be ordered what to do. Begging pardon, maybe I should have said we seem to be hard wired with the need for something (or someone) bigger than oneself that signifies, despite our troubles, that will stand as a bulwark against chaos & irrelevance.

Could be the arts, stem, even sports. Most everybody has something they revere.

Governance, at least in America, we tend to take for granted — until the s#it hits the fan and all of us political amateurs suddenly find ourselves in the thick of it.

We all seem to come hard wired with the need for a central authority figure.

Democracy fills that role for some of us, just as religion does for others. Lots of people are desperate (consciously or not) to regain the childlike certainty of rightness -

loyally living their life under the direction of someone or something big that makes it all worthwhile, and will somehow ‘see’ our devotion and be pleased. Oh what a feeling!

The Trump Cult has made its choice.

God, Democracy, family, neighbors, honesty with oneself, common decency, etc., be danmed.

If the devil were real, he would applaud the repetition of his fabled greatest trick -

convincing people that he does not exist. Cultists substituting Trump for God, or Mom &Dad, or Democracy — or any other ruling passion – are quite sure that no such thing exists.

One assumes that they will be amongst us for some time — the venal incentives for screwing over others are a strong pull.

Misanthropes are so much a part of humanity that we hardly bat an eye when their antics come to light. Sure hope we never normalize this kind of s#it. Or have we already begun?

Yeah, somehow the Nazi thing runs deep with these people.

One is a more than a little uncomfortable as to the why the children and grandchildren of those who gave the last full measure of their devotion to killing Nazis now have become Nazis.

Maybe we are overthinking. A simple yes/no question should suffice:

Do you agree with the statement We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal?

Yes, it’s getting worse. In 2020 we had a big union meeting with a vote for the new union president.

The union also provided free yard signs for all candidates — including Trump and Biden.

The local business agent stopped me from leaving after the meeting and demanded to know who I was and where I worked — unprecedented by all accounts – because I carried an armload of Biden/Harris signs.

Always a tell. The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

Speaking of sick irony, Clarence Thomas insisting that desegregation & equality laws are wrong and un-Constitutional.
