What’s more amazing here: seven out of eight days featuring Cranky, or that he got the lyrics to the song right?

Also, I guess we’re all done with the big senior softball storyline. And, as is typically the case with such events, Batiuk spent a week of bad wordplay up to the games and never actually showed us Ed and the team on the field. To TB Chekov’s Gun means you present it in Act I, talk about it in Act II, and then have someone say they tossed in in the river in Act III.

What, and blow the strip’s 2024 SFX budget? Better to just imply.

Please, it’s Dale Evans patrons in Centerville.

“So you cover these silver softball games for the paper? Gotta hand it to you…oops!”

“Our target demographic is folks with two strikes on ’em with two out in the bottom of the ninth, if you catch my drift.”

Guess Pmm and Jfff can’t be bothered with attending.

Yeah, but it’s a Centerville state of mind: slightly cynical, dependent on muddled aphorisms, and with that “senior citizen” sensibility. Worstview is bad puns, smirking, comic book commentary and the omnipresent stench of Dead St. Lisa.

Okay, okay, that’s a good one. Six straight days of Ed and a decent Friday punchline? In spite of Mopey’s punim dominating the landscape this week, it’s the most pleasant time I’ve spent in Centerville in a while.

That’s why the Village People were up to their armpits in ladies.

What other customers? This may be in the morning, but Ed’s the only patron depicted so far this week.

“You see, kiddo, I always hated your grandmother! Now I’m out for all the floozies and fun girls I can get my wrinkled mitts on!”

Is today’s joke amusing? Not especially, seeing as Ed is canonically dating fellow bus driver Mary. Are the Panel Three half-smirks annoying? Yes. Are we ever going to actually see the softball team in action? Probably not, at this rate. Still, it’s not Harry Dinkle, so I give it a thumbs up.
