So if America is not great now but had been great before, which “lost” aspect of America’s past greatness do you want to restore? Slavery? Genocide against indigenous people? “Separate but equal”? Homophobia to the degree that if someone beat another person up just for being gay, the person who was attacked would likely be the one to be arrested? Do you want a woman’s only valid role in society to be that of a homemaker? Perhaps you want our skies to be so polluted that there is a constant brown haze, or our rivers so polluted that they can literally catch on fire?

When humans eat garbage like that, it’s essentially suicide via an installment plan. Perhaps the consequences occurred much more quickly for them and none of them survived the experience.

While you’re looking things up, you should check out “Goofy Motor Mania”. Though it’s almost ¾ of a century old, the only aspect that seems dated is that it’s not set in a wasteland of surface parking lots. Otherwise, its depiction of the Jekyll & Hyde transformation that tends to take place when people get behind the wheel still rings quite true.

Yesterday I attended a volunteer orientation at a non-profit that had become the home for a stray cat. When I put my backpack in my lap and opened it to retrieve a notepad, the cat climbed into it and made himself comfortable. They had some veggie snacks, and each time I attempted to eat something, the cat batted it away. It was simultaneously hilarious, endearing, and annoying.

It is estimated that each gallon of gasoline represents about 196,000 pounds (98 tons!) of plant matter, yet the average American motorist burns more than that per day. Who, then, is the extremist?

That’s a fact that far too many people overlook. Changing to a nutritious diet is initially challenging, but it does not take long before you start to feel better 24/7. Not only are you likely to love longer, but you’re also less likely to suffer from maladies throughout your life, AND before too long your new dietary regimen will become so normalized that you’ll enjoy it just as much as you enjoyed your unhealthy diet.

It does seem truly absurd to cry “foul!” when corporations raise their prices – that’s what they’re expected to do whenever possible. In a market economy, sellers are free to charge what they want, but as prices go up, demand will go down and/or new sellers will choose to enter the market – the “invisible hand” will optimize things for both sellers and buyers. But that system is breaking down because (1) most goods are sold by such monstrous companies that it’s incredibly hard for new sellers to enter the marketplace, and (2) consumers are so addicted to their spending habits that price increases have little impact on demand.

I’m not holding my breath regarding a tRump loss come November, particularly given how much the Electoral College favors the Repugnants and their willingness to tilt the scales even farther by any means necessary. Nor do I believe that they’ll move away from tRumpism once his cheeseberder diet finally does him in or that their embrace of him will hurt them long-term. Even if you ignore the fickle nature of voters, it’s hard to argue that tRump isn’t emblematic of America. He’s racist; this country was founded on racism. He’s a moron; this country places little value on education and knowledge. He’s arrogant and self-absorbed; far too many Americans buy into the notion of our exceptionalism. He shows contempt for the environment; the U.S. is the most wasteful, pro-consumption nation in the world and you’ll be hard-pressed to find Americans who aren’t ardent car cultists.

Give us a couple more decades. We’ll succeed in removing what’s left and replacing it with suburban sprawl and cropland for growing animal feed.

All ten of the 10 fastest growing counties in the U.S. are pedestrian-hostile and designed exclusively around the automobile. To most Americans, a glut of parking lots is paradise.
