Before the quiz, Calvin was all up for betting 25 cents on who gets a higher grade. When it’s apparent he’s flunked, then he’s all “No bets! No gambles!”
They skipped the middle part of the story arc. The Dad attempts to teach Calvin basic arithmetic using coins, and Calvin soon catches on. The next day at school, when Miss Wormwood gives the class a math quiz, Calvin is sure he’ll ace it and bets Susie 25 cents he gets a higher grade.

A parent-teacher conference on the second week of school? (And we learn this was the kind where the class has all the students’ parents come and meet with the teacher.)
Once again, Calvin simply won’t accept defeat. And yep, I remember the dreaded Xs on a quiz or test I get handed back.
I also like the drawing of Susie in the last panel, with her triangle mouth.
