I live in a small town in southern Wisconsin (population around 1600). I love animals, especially cats and dogs and I am known as Mom by a bunch of cats. I like gardening (both vegetables and flowers) and I like to read. I also like writing and I have published a chidren's book called Wanda Weird. It's the story of a nine-year-old girl who is bullied by some mean girls in her class and how she learns to deal with them. I work in the garden center at a Walmart in Madison, WI. In the off season, I work in back-to-school, Halloween, Christmas, etc. AKA - "Seasonal". But garden season is by far my favorite.

I didn’t find my deer whistles yet, but I’ll keep looking. I found them recently when I was looking for something else, so I know I have some. All the same, I was ready to buy more at Walmart yesterday, but we didn’t have any. The count said we have 3, but there were none on the peg. Maybe they were stolen. I don’t have much of a bumper on my car, but maybe just enough to mount the deer whistles. I’m on vacation this coming week (Monday through Friday) so I have some time to dig in the closet for those whistles.

Anyway, I didn’t see any deer or any other animals on my drive home last night. I think I creamed a moth or some kind of bug that hit my windshield, but that was it. But driving to work yesterday, I saw a deer in the ditch in the general area where I saw the 2 fawns the other night. It wasn’t one of the fawns. This was an adult deer. Too far into the ditch to see its gender, but I can’t help wondering if it was the mother of those 2 fawns. That could explain why they were running around in such a confused state. I hope those fawns will be okay. If that was their mom, the poor babies must have been as scared as I was when I almost ran into them.

Oh my gosh! My first night driving home from work in my wonderful new Impala and I came so close to hitting not just one, but TWO deer that I’m still feeling shaky over 3 hours later. I saw the deer (two young fawns, old enough to not have their spots anymore, but too young and inexperienced to know the dangers of traffic) running across the highway in front of me. I slammed the brakes on hard enough so the groceries I had on my back seat fell onto the floor. I missed the deer by maybe a couple feet. Luckily, the person driving behind me also stopped without running into me. Well, of course, I came to a complete stop. The young deer didn’t know what to do. They stood there a while, then ran back and forth in front of me, then off onto the side of the road, then in front of me again. When they started trotting alongside the road, I followed behind, doing about 5 mph in case they took a notion to run in front of me again. When they finally ran off and out of sight, I finally was able to go faster again. But I just can’t get over the panic I felt at almost hitting those two. I wonder where their mother was? Gosh, I hope they were not running around in confusion because their mother had been hit by a car and was lying dead by the side of the road! I didn’t see anything like that, but it was dark and my eyes were focused on the fawns. After they ran off, I did watch for any other deer before I started moving again, but I was looking for live deer, not dead ones. I’m still feeling shaky, but I’m so relieved I didn’t hit them. The deer are fine and the car is fine and I’m not hurt. Fine will take some time for me to achieve.

In the morning, I’m going to take a closer look at my car to see if there is a place to stick deer whistles on the bumper (there wasn’t on my Malibu). I have some and if I can find them, and if I have a bumper to put them on, I will. I don’t know if they really work, but they can’t hurt. If I can’t find the ones that I know I have, I’ll buy more.

I picked a bunch of rhubarb yesterday. I made a batch of rhubarb sauce, which I will share with my brother, Mark, (which by the way, is the first name of the guy I bought my Impala from). I’m giving it to him partly in appreciation for helping me pick up my car yesterday from the dealer and partly just because I have plenty enough to share. I held back some stalks of rhubarb for my brother, Daniel, and his wife, Terre. Terre helped me pick up the rental car and Daniel will be helping me return it in the morning. Now I better head off to bed. It’s 3 in the morning and I have a busy day ahead of me, returning the rental car and then soon after that having to go to work.

By the way, the dealer I bought it from is the brother of a former classmate’s husband. Debbie used to live next door to us when we were kids. She married a guy named Tim soon after high school graduation. The car dealer is Tim’s brother.

Well, I had a pretty good day yesterday. I bought my new (used) car. I looked at hundreds of cars on Autotrader.com, finding nothing in my price range other than these 2 cars at a dealer in Cross Plains (about 9 miles from here). One was a red 2015 4-cylinder Chevy Cruze (I said yesterday is was a Malibu – that was a boo boo. They had a Malibu last week, but I didn’t know the fate of my own Malibu at the time). The other was a charcoal gray 2016 6-cylinider Chevy Impala. I liked the red, but I liked the size of the Impala better. I was debating which I should try to get, but it was taken out of my hands when someone else bought the Cruze on Wednesday. I had a restless night Wednesday night, thinking about getting a look at that Impala quick before anyone else could buy it. I got there the first thing Thursday morning and took it for a test drive and it fits me just right. I bought it. I found out while purchasing my car that the Impala had none of the “bells and Whistles” that you find on cars these days, but that the Cruze was loaded with extras. I don’t like a lot of “bells and whistles”. I like a simple, ordinary car. This car is similar in many ways to my Malibu. It even had a CD player, which I didn’t even notice until after I got it home. I’m really pleased about that. I always used the CD player in my Malibu. Then I remembered that I had left some CD’s in my Malibu. Luckily, it was still at Willie’s waiting for the salvage company to pick it up. So I was able to rescue my CD’s. I’m pleased and excited about my new car. I’ll be returning the rental (happily) first thing in the morning. It’s a nice car, but I actually like the Impala better.
