   All psychological motivations aside, maybe these painters had limited budgets and the nude models charged more per hour than the clothed ones. ;>)

   If the long haired blond is a young man, then it seems that while the brunette was swimming he took the opportunity to try on her clothes and make-up. In which case, this would not be a lesbian attempting to seduce a straight woman, but perhaps a straight man playing dress-up to seduce a lesbian. (Maybe Ish can put this alternate scenario in rhyme form.)

    When I was searching for information about this second painting I found many others by D’Espagnat showing naked women identified as bathers in a wooded setting. Most were of a lone figure, but several showed two women and at least one was like today’s with a nude next to a fully clothed companion, (but not nearly so obviously erotic). Maybe the message he got is “keep painting what you like… especially if it sells.”
