   Was there just before the pandemic, was told two transplants got into a race to be the big dog of local tourism. What used to be all mom & pop hotels is now so many chains and “conference centers” and “luxury resorts.” Even in the off-season, the park has a continuous flow of tour buses with day-trippers from cruise ships.

   Thirty-five years ago, I got off-season rates in May, in a mostly empty hotel and had the park largely to myself.
