   It would be ideal if they didn’t. But our university system is largely driven by private schools. Public universities are a different matter, of course, and they are affected directly by politics in this country. But the private system has been around for more than 300 years, and I doubt it’ll change anytime soon. The indebtedness to rich donors is too deeply baked into it.

   One reason for this dependence is precisely because they get to control what’s taught. I would much prefer the European model. Imperfect, but much less open to undue influence.
