I worked for him! A junior / middle manager in a large corporation who worked very hard to not draw attention to himself. He said that was his career policy: never be noticed. It had been working for him for about 20 years at that point.
Looking back at how quiet his job was, and how stressful it has been for me to get to the same position and stay there, I think his policy was the right one.
