Some of the most destructive ideas can come from someone ‘just thinking’ without being able to see all the possible outcomes. Worse if they fail to consider human nature, and the fact that people will not necessarily behave in a way that accommodates the idea.
If there’s a way to cheat, abuse and misuse a new idea, someone will find it and exploit it- and then comes all the hindsight about what safety precautions ought to have been put in place, but no one knew we’d need them. The idea was so wonderful. It was humans that disappointed us.
Every person who has a bright idea for new technology should have a devil’s advocate to think of all the way that it could go horribly wrong. The idea person won’t like it. They’ll argue and fight. But the mere fact that this might happen only underlines the need.
And 18 months after this strip ran, something called the Covid-19 pandemic shut everything down. So school was streamed. I don’t think money was saved in the effort.
