Heh, funny thing … just around the time this strip ran, I was visiting UMass, and ran into a remarkable janitor, a fellow who looked after some of the central campus buildings. He’d trained a number of the squirrels to come up and feed out of his hand, and to be comfortable with doing it while a flock of flabbergasted students clustered around. A long time ago now, but if that fellow’s still alive, good on ya, guy!

Had a neighborhood squirrel who would crawl into my jacket pocket after some treats.

mother got upset when he would scratch on the door at 5 AM to be fed. That’s one problem with finding their food for them.

“Eat death, squirrels!” That’s my Westie’s motto.

In the 70s, students cared a great deal about all those things.

We just didn’t go mobbing into the streets about it. But we did help start recycling programs, petition for peace acts (legislation etc.), and helped animals as we could. It wasn’t just disco, which got too much press and has mercifully passed away. We did care, and we acted on it.

Then came the wonderful Reagan years, with its high unemployment and generally sticking it to the little guy. Maybe our little squirrel friend would prefer the likes of Rush Limbaugh.
