Clayton: Mom, I got the homework blues.
Laura: Too much?
Clayton: Yeah. Between after-school activities, homework, dinner and bedtime, I get about fifteen minutes to myself.
Laura: Mmmmm. Fifteen minutes to myself...
Just heard a psychologist give a talk the other day about this. Essentially he said we think kids shouldn’t have “down time” because so often we ourselves don’t. The problem with this, he said, is that we need it, too, and because we don’t have it, our reasoning skills are blunted – and our “wisdom” declines. People need time to themselves, no matter what age. Adults, however, have more power to rearrange their lives to get it.
This is why so many kids now and days can’t even begin to think of a way to solve problems in their own lives. They don’t develop imaginations, or develop artistic skills of their own accord. They’re so overly structured that when they aren’t being told what to do, they can’t think of what they want to do, other than playing a video game, which is actually more structure if you think about it.

Guess it’s all in how you look at it.

I’ve been late to work/school more times than I’d like to admit because of my daily comics…
Laura looks turned on by the thought of 15 minutes to herself. If Adam was smart he’d make that happen!

It’s all in your perspective, right mom?
