Clerk; Seriously, Laura. How can a mom-and-pop bookstore compete against the chains and the internet? Laura; Well, we need to provide something that they can't. Clerk; Like? Laura; Like personality, expertise, a good cup of coffee and a friendly smile. Clerk; How do we compete with their prices and limitless selection. Laura; Did you get a load of this smile?

@simpsonfan2 The online stores are owned by the big chainstores.

I suppose you could carry titles that the big box stores don’t carry, and become the place to go for that difficult to find book.

Wait, I’m confused… are you trying to sell us on the online book sellers (“prices and limitless selection”) or brick & mortar stores? :-s

I absolutely love the “indies”! But then, I love real books, not mass-produced junk. Even in Crete I discovered a little “hole-in-the wall” bookseller, and brought my tour group to meet him, and many folks purchased something. I doubt any of them would have bothered with a chain store. Plus, we met others from around the world, and after hours, had great conversations and new friends.
Admittedly, I slowed down when I realized I was acquiring a six foot tall bookcase about every five weeks. So I’m down to only seven of them, with books read over and over, and visitors are delighted. (I keep the paperbacks in another room-grin.)
