The 1971 Gene Wider version, which is the one Adam would have seen as a kid, does have a couple of genuinely terrifying scenes. The boat ride through the tunnel comes to mind (the relevant part ends at 2:15):

(The 2005 Johnny Depp version was called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, not Willy Wonka (…) anyway).
As a child, the movie that scared me the most was just a scene in “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.”
Funny story: We bought this movie to watch with our daughter when she was eleven or so. My hubby swore up and down he’d never seen this movie. Then that scene (the one with the child catcher and his wagon came on) and hubby suddenly remembered the nightmares this scene had given him as a child. He must have suppressed the memory of this movie it had scared him so much. We had a good laugh about that then!
My youngest son was 4 when he saw “Ghostbusters” for the first time. For months after that, he had to put his pajamas on in the living room because he was scared that, “The Ghostbusters are going to get me!” Almost 30 years later, and we still “remind” him of that!

I have never felt comfortable with Willie Wonka either. Apparently I am not alone.

For 1995, I would choose “The Frighteners” for fears, chills, funny stuff in the between.

For me, it was “Soylent Green”, because it all seemed so feasible…

Maybe if you think about the chid slave labor that is used in real life to harvest the chocolate in Africa you might sow down.
