In the classic novel “Jane Eyre”, on the first day of the heroine’s incarceration at that horrid Lowell School for Girls, one of the students complained, “The porridge is burnt again!” So, you see—burning cereal isn’t so far-fetched after all!
Back in the day, I rented out rooms in my house to an ever-changing roster of feckless, unmarried guys. Since they were responsible for their own food, I taught several of them a few easy, basic recipes. Feckless they surely were, but they had no trouble learning to cook simple meals. But then, I’d been cooking since I was 16 and negotiated with my mom to cook for the family in exchange for horseback-riding lessons.
