Long time ago, I put a trailer on my bicycle that had an igloo cooler, jerry-rigged with a peltier cooler, scooter battery, and a speaker to play turkey in the straw, pop goes the weasel, etc. I made bank for 2 days until stopped by the cops to inspect my peddler’s license. News to me. I dutifully applied for one at the city building. Oops, you need approval from the land owner where you will operate, which means paying rent, or in the case of public property, from the neighborhood association in the area. Attended a meeting, got on the agenda. Waited 4 months for the next meeting, proposal was heard. Waited another 4 months, proposal was debated. Waited another 4 months, proposal was denied. NIMBY pervaded. Next summer, I thought “forget that noise”. Three days later, I was stopped by the police but instead of telling me to get a license, they just took my bike and trailer and auctioned it all off separately. There was a brief hearing in the basement of the municipal building with the assistant to the assistant city prosecutor. I became a right-leaning liberal that day.
