Back in 7th grade, my History teacher had this theory that after graduating from school, kids should take their retirement when they could put it to use, then come back into the work force for the rest of their lives. Personally, I’m glad I don’t have to work. I don’t think I could be of any use.

Travis McGee would take a job, then use the funds to retire for a while until he needed to work again.

Putter around for a few years before dying is better than dying on the job.

The entire concept of retirement is only a a few decades older than 100 years now. People always worked jobs (or contributed by caring for the family home or their grandchildren) pretty much up until their deaths. Prior to 1880 – 1900, nobody seriously considered the idea that they had the right to be non-productive for years or even decades. It’s amazing how this idea has evolved to an entitlement for everyone in such a relatively short period of time…culturally.
