Totally true. I know a lot of great individuals. But once they aggregate into a group of people, they suck.

It’s easy to get an us and them attitude in retail. I’ve been on the employee side of the checkstand enough times to know why.

Nothing makes me happier in a store than an employee who knows something about the product I’m interested in. Too often—all too often—they are clueless. C’mon bosses !! Train your employees better.

Pro tip: If you’re a jerk to the staff, they will mercilessly mock and laugh long and loud about you in the break room.

Having spent a bit of time at a lot of levels of trade, I try to treat all with respect until they abuse the assumption. When I’m the one with the problem, I preface with “Pay attention, I’m civilized but currently irate about this situation. Help me sort out my problem or correct me if I’m wrong.” Doesn’t always get me an answer to my problem, even when there is one, but doesn’t create opposition before we even begin. Has often got me transferred up a notch on the hierarchy, or in some cases a small team formed to get my answer together.
