When I was in the military when it came time for performance reviews we got graded in three areas 1) Physical Fitness, 2) Military Bearing, and 3) Job Performance
I wasn’t the fastest runner though, so my Physical Fitness score would often take a dip. Okay fine, that IS what that grade is for. But I remember one time my Military Bearing had received a ding, so I asked why, and the person doing the review said it was because I didn’t score as well as they wanted on the Fitness test.
When I tried to seek clarification on why that was hurting my military bearing, I got a wishy-washy answer. Now here’s the really fun part, when scores came out for promotion I was a SINGLE point behind what I needed for promotion because of that double hit on my Physical Fitness.
Seriously, while I enjoyed my time in the military it was also the worst when it came to things like that. They didn’t want me to be promoted and because the rules for how to grade a person on physical fitness were spelled out explicitly they couldn’t ding me any more points from there. But hey Military Bearing SOUNDS like it should be well defined, but what it ended up being was a catch-all for anything that the higher-ups just didn’t like about you if they didn’t want you to get promoted.
