Corporations do that. Stores in such areas suffer from lack of corporate attention and as customers dwindle they shut them down by rationalizing with “Lack of customers” while other stores in richer areas get remodelled and renovated. And the people in the areas where the stores used to be are now in a food desert.

When we first got stationed here at Ft Liberty (formerly Bragg) I got a job as a driver at Domino’s. The store I worked for delivered to about 2/3s of post. We always had a lot of drivers for the rush and then management would ask who wants to go home early. One night they were asking for volunteers to go work at another store for a few hours. Being new to the area I was unaware of how dangerous it was. It was by the I95, so they told me it was mostly hotels. I did indeed deliver to some hotels that night. If only that was all I did. I had to get gas at a station were a guy was “taking a leak” around the corner of the building on the wall. Then I had to go to a house were very few of the streetlights worked. The house didn’t have its light on. This is before cellphones were the norm, so there was no way I could call and verify. Getting out of my car a guy from across the street came over. I was so scared. Come to find out it was his order. He tipped me well, but I never volunteered again. Of course robberies can happen anywhere. At a different pizza joint I was the main one to train new drivers. The woman I had taken on ride-alongs was ready to go it alone. We had two orders up. One for 82nd Replacement Center (for civilians that is where soldiers go when they first get to a new base-there are 2 here, 82nd Airbourne’s and 19th for the rest of post) and one for a dirt road without any lights that is hard to find. I took that one and gave her the “safe” one. Some idiots ran up and stole the bag out of her hands! That should have been one of the safest areas. The jerk that owned the restaurant wanted her to pay for the bag. I started mentioning a lawsuit about unfair practices and he backed off. Surprisingly she stayed with us for a while.
