My first real job out of high school was assistant manager at a variety store. (It’s what we called nickel and dime stores after the prices went up.) I made less than the sales clerks did. I did learn how to make keys, and trim window shades to a specific length which served me well in later years as a computer systems analyst…
At a party my wife asked my supervisor why he thought I hadn’t applied for any supervisory positions. His response was that I was good at what I did and enjoyed it. Why screw it up for the same reasons given above?
I was at the art supply store for a workshop today. Customers kept coming in and asking me for help. I got them where they needed to go for what they were looking for, and helped show them the various papers that would work whit what they wanted to do. The manager jokingly said they were going to give me a nametag. I’m there every week, so it does look like I work there, to be honest.

When you put it that way, it’s so hard to resist. Sorta like an invitation to put your hand on a hot burner. Ouch!

How many bosses does this store need, and why isn’t THE boss the one who is offering the “promotion”?

It says a lot that her friend’s well being is more important than having someone to delegate a portion of her workload to.

I’ve been asked why I never went to management.“I had the heart attack, I don’t need the ulcer.”
