Really. My school had jackets and sweaters. Athletics warranted a block letter and non sports a script letter. Being in band and orchestra, it was script for me. But we won more competitions and stuff than the athletes, so while they had their block letters we also had stars and patches and stuff. Even third place in Rose Parade was a big deal. And first place two years later was even bigger.
I went to a brand new high school in 1960. The art teacher picked our school colors. Muted red and grey. The students voted on a mascot name. Dragons won. Then there was a revolt. Unfortunately some of the kids thought it sounded like a gang name. We were 25 miles north of Chicago where street gangs were a big deal. There was another vote and Warriors won. I’m still disappointed.

If they had a philatelist club, he could have got one with a stamp on it.
