I stopped writing in cursive in 7th grade (1970). I was just never very good at it. But kids should be taught cursive so they should at least be able to read it.
Some knucklehead tried running a bill through our state legislature this year to put cursive back in the curriculum. Nobody signed off on it … didn’t know how.
When I first taught third grade, I spent 1/2 an hour a day perfecting the kid’s handwriting. By the time I sent them on to fourth grade, they ranged from very good to beautiful. The third grade teacher next door taught cursive by announcing that from now on we will be writing in cursive, and putting up a set of cursive letters for the kids to refer to when they forgot how to make a letter. By the end of sixth grade, you couldn’t tell which kids she had and which had been in my class.
Some private schools and home schooling curriculums teach cursive writing. my daughter has learned it and uses it. In fact her cursive writing is far more legible than her hand lettering.

I know of adults today that can not read cursive.
One woman thought it was some sort of foreign language.

I put a cursive thank you note in all my eBay shipments and wonder how many buyers are able to read it. Oh well, it’s their loss.
