Thunderbird Park in Victoria, Canada has several fine examples from various nations. If you ever travel up, or out here, it is worth the trip. One of our neighbours has one, called a “House Frontal Pole”. This type of pole, usually 20 to 40 ft (6 to 12 m) (Theirs is about 2.5 m) tall is the most decorative. Its carvings tell the story of the family, clan or village who own them. Theirs depicts the family. These poles are also known as heraldic, crest, or family poles. Poles of this type are placed outside the clan house of the most important village leaders. Often, watchman figures are carved at the top of the pole to protect the pole owner’s family and the village. (Two carvings at their front entrance depict their dogs) I don’t know what sort of bird is in the pictured pole, but it’s too small to be a Thunderbird. Or even a raven. Looks like a bear on top and maybe a dog below. So, they are in PNW or the west coast of Canada?

I would have been more concerned that, regardless of the number of faces in the profile pic, he didn’t quite seem human. I’m funny that way.
