They KNEW but what could they do? They were enslaved by the Kornfederate government and the Kornfederate Army was there to enforce their enslavement. Word had gotten out. But the Union Army being there made it official.
This is one of many reasons some people want to take a big eraser to American history. Our forebears were far from perfect. Of course some of us right now are far from perfect. Having had parents and having been married for 50 years I have no illusions about my own perfection.
