Good Morning Annie Fans! Hope Boo Boo’s going to be all right.

LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE AND SANDYBy Harold Gray, 1933CHAPTER 4 – A Narrow EscapeThe next night Annie walked home from school with Sandy as usual. “Hurry up, Sandy. If we’re much later, Mr. Futile will think we’re lost,” said Annie as she started across the street. But a car was coming rapidly, a flashy roadster, which was being driven much too swiftly upon that village street. Sandy was barely halfway across when the car was upon him, nor did it swerve or slacken speed to allow him to get out of the way.“Hey! Look out!!!” screamed Annie as she caught Sandy and pulled him almost from under the wheels of the car. The car rolled on, and while Annie and Sandy scuttled into some bushes along the walk, the driver’s laughter came back to them. “Ha! Ha! Ha!” To him Sandy’s narrow escape had just been a big joke. When he had turned a corner, Annie went out into the street again and picked up her cap. “Elmer Pinchpenny!” she told Sandy. “Another inch and he’d have got us both. Thinks he’s funny, eh? I’ll fix that baby’s clock.”The more Annie thought of her narrow escape, the more angry she became. When she met Elmer Pinchpenny on the street the next day, she walked up to him and told him what was on her mind. “Sa-a-ay, I’ve been lookin’ for you. What’s the idea o’ nearly running over people in the street? Are you looney?”Elmer Pinchpenny continued to smoke his cigarette. He spoke with contempt in his voice. “Oh, you must be that grubby little orphan I’ve heard about,” drawled Elmer. “I guess it wouldn’t have been much loss if you had got hit. Run along now,” he continued. “I don’t wish to talk to you.”Annie was amazed. Although she had been an orphan and alone in the world ever since she could remember, no one had spoken to her before in just that tone of voice. Annie’s temper was aroused, and she made a dash at Elmer even as he raced to his car. “Why, you – you – I’ll show you who you’re talking too,” sputtered Annie. But Elmer had started his engine and the roadster tore down the street before angry little Annie could touch him. His mocking laugh echoed back, as it had the night before. “Ha! Ha! Ha!”
