LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE AND SANDYBy Harold Gray, 1933CHAPTER 5 – Sandy Is LostEvery evening Sandy came to meet his little mistress as she was on her way home from the store. “Funny how you can always tell without a watch,” said Annie one night. “But we understand each other pretty well, don’t we Sandy? We oughta, after all these years together.”Sandy had been with Orphan Annie as long as either of them could remember. On the streets, in the orphan’s home, and in Daddy Warbucks’ fine home, the two had taken care of each other, because, really, Sandy was the only family that little Annie had in the world. “I don’t know what I’d do, if anything should ever happen to you,” Annie continued. “No matter what happens, we’ll stick together always, won’t we Sandy?”But the very next night Sandy was missing. Annie was ready to leave the store, but Sandy did not meet her. Nor was he at the Futile’s house. Mrs. Futile said he had left as he always did every night to meet Annie when the store closed. On Sunday he was still missing, slthough Annie searched the neighborhood for him. She did not find him in the village; so she went farther out into the country, searching under every bush and tree, asking everyone she met whether they had seen her dog. When she met Mr. Agate, the editor of the village newspaper, she asked him too. “Have you heard anything, Mr. Agate?”“Not yet, Annie,” he said. “But I’ve phoned all over the country and Pete has sent word to all the police for miles. Someone is bound to locate Sandy any time now.”But Annie was still afraid, and as she walked away she was worried. “Maybe he got caught in a trap,” she kept thinking, “or broke through the ice, or got stolen. But I won’t give up. He wouldn’t give up if I were lost.”

In Chapter 3 Annie says, "there goes Elmer,,,in his swell car. This is slang from the 1930s.Reminds me also of an episode of “I Love Lucy”. Lucy didn’t want little Ricky to grow up with an accent so she hired an elocution teacher. The teacher said, “There are two word I want you to never use. One is ‘swell’ and the other is ‘lousy’.”Lucy replied, "Okay. What are the words?
