FAMOUS COSTUMED CRIMEFIGHTERS SCHOOLBoca Raton, FLLesson #33: Learning From the PastTo put it simply, we’ve never heard of these guys. This brings up an important issue – who teaches the prospective crusader?Ask any of our graduates, and they’ll tell you that “comic books” almost never get the TRUE story. They are the modern descendents of the old pulp western novels, which were the particular annoyance of alumnus Dan Reid (?, Class of ‘33). Mr. Reid complained loud and long that, while he did wear a mask, 75% of the stories in the pulps regarding him did not occur and that he NEVER called his sidekick “stupid” – in any language. (If you take his class, don’t get him started – you’ll be there all day…)Comic books were designed as fantastic entertainment, and never as textbooks for the aspiring hero, which makes for a BIG red flag for “Captain Snafu” above, especially if he’s going to use them to train his sidekick. That being said, in fairness it must be pointed out that one of the influences on Dean Emeritus B. Wayne (Class of ’36) was the19th Century masked rider Zorro (D. de la Vega, pre-FCCS era), but our research has shown that Johnston McCulley was one of the few pulp authors who actually got the story right…
