Janis: So holding a match between your teeth doesn't keep you from crying?
Arlo: No!
Janis: Oh, look! This site says the match should be lighted!
Janis: Maybe the idea is to work fast!
Chop onions near a sink while running hot water in the sink. The steam from the water will help, a little. I learned this years ago while working a summer job. One of my duties was chopping 10lb bags of onions for onion rings. The memory still brings a tear to my eye.
Seems to me you light the match, blow it out, then inhale the marginally more benign burnt match smell to cover the onion chemistry. Heck, just learn to love onions.
the trick is to use a candle, light a candle (scented, unsented, whatever) and place it roughly 8 inches to the left or right, whichever way you are cutting. the oils that spray from the onion burn off before going into the air.

Just rinse the onion before chopping after a little peeling under cold water for half a minute. You’ll be fine.

Sharp knife = less bruising = less juices sprayed around. (Which, zedman2222, was not mentioned in the other hints yesterday.)

Try Vicks Vapor Rub under the nose. Blocks out the odor.

Lemon juice does take the chemicals out of onions. Just try it. It works for me.
