Actually, you can seal your Kindle (or whatever) in a ziploc when reading in the tub. Since it’s small and light, it’s much easier to keep dry than a large hardback.
I usually took the readers digest into the bathroom, if it got wet, it wasn’t a problem, wouldn’t take real books or a e-reader there, much to valuable.
Screw the tech talk, I agree with simsonfan2…He’s gonna be in there for some reason…Heck, even I could come up with a couple reasons………It’s just a device….Let’s call it a plot device…..
you can get waterproof plastic covers for Kindles, Nooks, iPads and tablets and yes usually your purchases are backed up on the server. Come on dudes! does anyone really think that after all the years Arlo still gets off on seeing Janis “nekkid”? also how come it’s ALWAYS Janis in the tub? doesn’t Arlo bathe? maybe Janis would get off on seeing his “Erector set” though i am sure she can recall it’s appearance.maybe she could help him stiffen his resolve if ya know what i mean ;-p
Obviously, electronic devices have improved if you can drop them in the tub and still use them. I had my cell phone in my purse during a downpour and the dampness ruined it. Paperback books can be saved with a hairdryer.
" Cats don’t like to take baths."True, most of the time. But my daughter had a cat that would jump right in the tub with her and play with the shadows, etc. Guess it takes all kinds.
In Panel 2, Alro’s stray hair stands straight up in shock when he hears Janis’ yell. Unfortunately, it looked to me as though he’d said, “OH, NOOooo!!”
Once I was in a McDonald’s bathroom when I heard a young woman come up with something a lot more pungent than what Janice said today. Then she yelled to a friend, “I just dropped my #@^}} cell phone in the toilet!” I had to bite my lip.
I have both real books, and e-books.If I’m in my home, sitting on the couch, only paper in a binding will do.My Kindle goes with me to coffee shops. Or into a plastic sandwich bag, if I’m taking a “book” to the beach, or park.
When I want to take a hot bath, just to soak for a while, I don’t take books in there with me. I want to sit with my eyes closed and enjoy the hot water.

I’ve ruined one or two actual books like that.

That IS an advantage of e-books, actually.
Yes, if that’s a Kindle, she may have ruined it, but hopefully, it doesn’t mean she’s lost or destroyed the books!
Unlike a pile of soggy paper books, you can restore your e-library onto a replacement device from a back-up on Amazon.com,
I’m told you can also keep back-ups on your computer.
Her smartphone probably has a Kindle app on it, too…. maybe she even shares the books between devices…if so, some are there, as well.

Most electronic stuff you rinse well in distilled water – let it dry out thoroughly – and it’s good to go. I’ve done that with several cell phones.

So, how does this work in the shower?

The book stuff, that is. I understand the “excuse” to walk in there part.

The rice trick might fix the kindle, but I don’t recommend doing that to Janice.
