Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for November 29, 2013
Transcript:
Arlo: One weekend of ginned-up spending, mostly on things no one really needs! Arlo: But if there's not enough spent, the economy tanks! Does that make any sense? Janis: OK, so what's your solution? Arlo: Just because I don't have a solution doesn't mean there's not a problem!

Nothing says Christmas like one of Arlo’s economic rants. I’ve missed them.

It’s insane that people spend so much just for one day out of the year, then worry come January about how they’ll pay for the junk they bought. I used to work with a woman, who one Christmas, bought 70 presents for her daughter; then “just to be fair” she bought 70 presents for her son.

Ain’t no way I’m shopping today! And the Tampa Bay Times said that lines were shorter than expected at stores that opened on Thanksgiving. Ha, ha, ha.

Once it was a single shopping day, the day after Thanksgiving. Then, Law of Deminishing Returns set in and stores started offering deals for days before. Suddenly it no longer made sense to camp out in wet, cold weather for a chance to buy 1 of 25 iPads for $25.

Which idea? The problems with the economy didn’t start with him, nor did overspending and it they won’t end with him.

I don’t shop on Black Friday. I do decorate. Tree is up and inside stuff is done. Getting ready to go do the outside (normally would do it tomorrow, but have a lot of other stuff to do then).

If we stopped using the profit margins of the 1% (AKA “the economy”) as the sole measure of the health of a society it would be a good start.
