I believe the little star behind Janis’ back in panel 2 is supposed to show that Arlo is hugging just a little too tight and playing dead is the quickest way to get him to stop.

I agree and it looks like he has his hug around her neck so yes, ouch!

But note, please. She’s smiling.

Bare hugs are more fun!

Careful Arlo, you could hurt her…

The star means he cracked her back. My wife askes me to “bear hug” her all the time to crack her back. Says it feels great.
