As parents, we wish for the day when we can see our children become responsible adults. Janis is seeing that in her son, but it is bittersweet. The roundabout reference to Arlo’s boat is that he, too, looked forward to the day when he could play on a boat instead of worrying about raising his son.
To me is sure seems that Arlo is avoiding dealing with the boat. He may no longer want it, or he may be not feeling capable enough to deal with the inevitable problems he would find when he does visit it. But, for whatever reason, I get the distinct impression that Arlo is sort of feeling/wishing the boat would go away. Maybe Arlo is channeling JJ’s own suggested lack of enthusiasm about pursuing a boat story arc?

Maybe they can sail (lol, I actually did that on accident, but it works) it to another poor, unsuspecting couple.

It was his dream for so long. Now he has it and doesn’t really want it but is finding it impossible to let it go. Not uncommon.

Sell the boat and use the money to help the kids.
