truth. I used to have a lot of WWII and Korean War vets as patients at one assignment, and all their ink was blurred, especially the tat’s on their arms exposed to the sun.

Gus’s may indeed look like a bruise, but what do you think yours will look in 50 years? And there are a lot more of them.

Ralphyork666: Does it tick you off to hear idiots say, “Happy Memorial Day”? I’m lucky. No one in my family ever died in war. Still, it really bothers me that people have forgotten the real purpose of the day.

But Gus’ tat commemorated something other than self indulgence.

Reminds me of my favorite tattoo story: When a friend was in the Marines long ago, a group of them came down to San Diego to party in Tijuana. My friend started to feel ill and didn’t go to Tijuana. When the group came back drunk they decided to all get tattoos. One guy had “Allergic to Penicillin” inked on his shoulder and butt. When they all showed their new artwork my friend pointed out that the artist misspelled “Allergic” on one and “Penicillin” on the other! At least by now they may be starting to blur and people will be asking “What did it say?” instead of “Hey did you know…”

A shipmate got a tattoo of the submarine dolphins on his forearm. Unfortunately, the tattoo was backward.

Memorial Day is for remembering the dead. Those that have given the final measure of their life to their country. As a 54 year Marine I say we raise a glass or six with the partial toast, “To Absent Friends”. I have too many. Then I will wait until Veterans Day to celebrate all those that have served.

There should be no fanfare I agree. I sad time and to reflect on past wars and wars going on and new ones opening up. (Are we ever going to leave Afghanistan? Been 16 years now and counting. Are we the British now?)
