A little girl who was visiting us was meowing to our cat. Eddie suddenly flattened his ears and raced up the stairs.“What did you say to him?”“I don’t know. I don’t speak cat.”

I’ve done this. And mocked the cat’s movements. They look at me like “Who’s this silly human?”

I speak to a couple of my cats like this. Orion, who passed last year, really liked ‘talking’ with me. We’d carry on for several minutes at times before he would settle on my lap, purring.

He is not ashamed. “I know you are, but what am I?”

One of my cats is “talky” but the other won’t carry on a civil conversation. It is “Feed me!” or “Let me in” period.

My tortie is a talker and I talk back to her. Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish which one of us is making the sounds.
