I just read the comments on this, WOW is all I can say!!
In what less than 12 years we decided to to go to the moon, we did it and then we abandoned it (we have been in Afghanistan longer and spent more money than the moon program took. Why are we still in Afghanistan?). Now that someone has gotten their act together, private business at that and we are looking at going back, most of the comments are negative. Pestilence? Garbage dump? WTF?
We Americans NOW have buy tickets (from the Russians) to get back to the space station we built after giving up manned space flight. Now we have private citizens getting us back into the game and people are generating negative vibes!
Back when I was a kid spaceships landing on their tails was something from the comics as was having a device on your person for two-way communication! The future holds a better life for all of us!
Embrace what we can do, don’t work towards stopping the advances.
Wow. After 50 years, we are finally about to take the first steps to take our rightful place among the stars, and to use the lessons learned to improve life on earth, and all you can think of is pestilence, garbage, disease, and self-hatred. Stay home and wallow in your misery if you wish. I am enjoying the hell out of our new space endeavors.
If I remember correctly, it is thought that there is a large supply of helium 3 locked in the surface of the moon as a by-product of solar radiation. It is also thought that helium 3 is more likely to be used to produce controlled fusion to produce electricity. One way or another, the production of electricity by nuclear means can be done on the back side of the moon in a way that would not risk endangering the earth. Of course there would still be the problem of sending that energy back to the earth.
Humans have littered the Earth and now they want to do the same thing to the Moon. When they set up a colony on the Moon, everyone will feel right at home.
I can clean my attic, garage, basement, shed and junk drawer and park it in rented space on the moon. I am waiting for Lunar Storage Wars on the Moon on the Discovery Channel
I watched every Apollo launch on TV, am a fan of science fiction, and glad to see us getting serious about manned spaceflight again. I think the concerns over shipping our garbage to the moon are overblown due to the cost—as stated in another comment, only part of Gene Roddenberry’s ashes were sent into space because of the cost. BTW, that cost factor is also the biggest flaw in the space travel stories (but I still love ’em).
While it was misreported by most sources for decades, Armstrong’s actual quote was “One small step for a man…”, not just “man”. And it makes a lot more sense that way, too. The radio transmission from the moon had a small dropout that made the “a” very difficult to pick up. But Armstrong mentioned it later in a number of interviews. Without the “a”, essentially “man” and “mankind” would mean the same thing— making the quote kind of senseless. Whereas “a man” refers to just one man, Armstrong, and sets up the contrast with “mankind”.

Every once in a while Jimmy needs to purge himself of accumulated negative vibes. Then he returns to his jolly old self.
Unfortunately this brings out the tribe from Negativeville. Then they go away.
