I recently saw something that made a really good point: successful retirement means learning how to program yourself. All your life, you’ve been programmed by other people—employers, clients, spouses, children, parents, friends, co-workers, you-name-it. Now, suddenly, you’re much more in charge of yourself. Well, the more you can control, the more you must control; the more unprogrammed time you have, the more it’s on you to program it yourself. That means doing things that don’t feel much like retirement, such as keeping a calendar, having goals, making plans, making decisions. Those things don’t feel much like retirement until you realize that you’re making YOUR plans, settting YOUR goals, keeping YOUR calendar, making YOUR decisions. Then it starts to feel really wonderful!

I remember a time when I envied my cat Macushla (pictured) because when I went off to work she was laying on the bed snoozing. I wanted to join her!

Sunday seems to be about Ludwig most of the time

The correct sequence is: eat, groom, sleep, poop, and amuse yourself (which takes minimal time). But Ludwig knows all that.

That’s a first: Arlo, the happy-go-lucky retiree shows signs of discontent with his way of life.
