I just got my first smartphone at age 69. I downloaded the 65-page PDF and read it cover to cover. It tells me how to upload / download pictures, use the GPS to navigate, do peer-to-peer networking with other phones.

One thing it doesn’t tell me how to do is answer the phone when it rings. It took my wife who has been using smart phones for almost a decade two test calls to figure it out. That was about 120 seconds worth of ringing.

You have to learn when to press, when to tap, when to double tap, when to hold and when to swipe.

You have children?! Oh, pity the world. In any case, I doubt they know “computer stuff.”

I taught computer courses for 2 different Technical College as well as for different companies and a pile of one-on-one training. However the one person that I tried and then refused to try and teach how to use a computer was my mother. I turned her training over to my daughters. She wanted to know how to center something on a page from top to bottom. I told her to type something and I would show. She said that she didn’t want to type anything she just wanted to know how to do it. She said that she was going to write something later and center it but all she wanted to know right now was which button to press later to get it centered. Since she didn’t know what she was going to write later she wasn’t going to write anything now. because it wouldn’t work the same way later when she decided what she was going to write. Sometimes I wondered if she was really my mother. :)

Of course, when it comes to knives, I taught you everything you know … not everything I know.

Of course, the brother with the missing eye isn’t really all that Happy that she taught them how to use a spoon before she taught them how to get away from their insane brother.
