I was very fortunate: I had two moms. There was the woman who raised me. Then there was the woman I got to know as an adult.
I was the youngest, so once I was out of the house, she stopped being mom and became herself. She took up new hobbies, got active in civics , read a lot and awakened a dormant sense of humor.
There was a transition period where things did not go so smoothly – she had to stop thinking of me as a dependent child and I still had some more growing up to do – but we worked through that.
Initially she had issues with the woman who stole me from her, but once we convinced her that I was to my wife as my father was to her, that went away.
Also, she did not understand the lifestyle we lived (I was active duty military) and how it could be possible to raise children in that environment. Her view was of that of a WWII GI. Military family life was a lot better in the 1970’s. I finally convinced her that I was NOT living in a barracks.
So, I enjoyed a double-relationship with my mother. Both as her son and as an adult. I enjoyed her company on both roles.
