My daughter seems to have liked the idea that I was a little different than most moms. She and her friends really enjoyed the birthday parties I had for her. I once walked into a well-known Mexican restaurant that the kids loved and asked if I could buy the necessary ingredients for tacos at home. I was told they had never done that before, and I almost left, but I was talking to the assistant manager who decided it was an interesting challenge. She went way above and beyond, I was given everything needed, and the kids spent a lot of time putting together their own tacos, getting them exactly as they wanted. No complaints, lots of fun, minimal work and clean up for me (except the DQ birthday cake that was on a plastic sheet to protect dining room table and melted quite a bit so they played with their hands with the melted ice cream after a while). It was a sleepover, and everyone seemed to have a great time. Probably had close to a dozen young girls to wrangle by myself. I came up with a great way to set up boundaries: ask them to do it. They came up with “can’t do” things I hadn’t even thought of! All the parties we had were lots of fun. Crazy? Maybe crazy fun. But I didn’t allow them to run wild.
