For me, it was 1967, when I was 17, but it was basically the same story … I was going to Provincetown with a couple of friends, but was broke, so I sold my guitar for $50. Yes, I felt wealthy. The $50 took care of everything I needed. I never told my parents when they asked me what happened to my guitar. They always thought my boyfriend stole it.
When I was 16 it was 1975. According to the inflation calculator $50 in 1975 is nearly $280 today. Yeah I’d feel sorta rich with that much money if I could have it just for spending. Too bad amazon dot com didn’t exist then. I’d probably be on my way to K-Mart.
I made $20 a week (before taxes) when I was in high school. Somehow that was enough to get me through my week.
I sound like my parents who would told me that they got 25 cents and it was good enough for a subway ride to and from Coney Island from Manhattan and enough left over for a hot dog and a soda.
When I was 16 I’d travel via subway for a nickel to Coney Island, have a Nathan’s hot dog, fries and drink for 15 cents, and subway ride home for another nickel. All told I spent 25 cents and had a fun day!
It didn’t happen until I was 17, but I remember calculating how far I could get on $3 worth of gas, and taking a 250-mile road trip on it. Misadventure didn’t even occur to me then. Did have a misadventure on that trip, but using a handkerchief to tie the ignition coil in place when the clamp broke took care of it for that trip.

“I miss being a Miss and having a boy spend $50 on our Sweet Sixteen Prom date. Also, that might be the last time Iwas ‘Sweet’!”

I remember when $20 was plenty for a weekend away.

Having the mind of a sixteen year old helps but I’d need about $500 these days.

That was my weekly salary when I was 16. I had to give half to my mother.

My adolescence was horrible! Never want to relive that! I miss being 25, newly married and planning for our 1st child. Everthing seemed possible.

Sometimes I wonder if the store now charges by the bag. It doesn’t seem to matter what I get but it always turns out to be about $50 a bag…

I do not miss being 16. Pre-med was a difficult time.

Aunty, that’s because at 16 you had to work to find someone to buy you booze, so that $50 was in you purse longer.

I don’t miss my teenage years at all. Now, if I could go back to being 36, I go there in a heartbeat.
