When I was in grade school the only reason to trade lunches was to get a different flavor of jelly on the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. No air-conditioning & no refrigeration for kids lunches, meant that sandwiches with meat or condiments like mayonnaise were a recipe for a severe case of the green apple quick step.
Do the elementary schools still do the ‘Nutrition Police’ routine? They would confiscate foods deemed ‘bad’, force the kids to eat whatever school food was offered, then charge – and lecture – the parents later about it.
Damson plum is the the correct name for the “blue” or “italian” plum.
We have that tree in our back yard. Not until you have waited, what seems like weeks and weeks, for the plums to ripen, have you ever tasted a more heavely flavor!!! For one thing, the plum has to be almost tender to the touch, and dark orangy color on the inside for it to taste with just the right amount of sweetness.
You’ll never get that flavor from the store, since all such soft fruit is picked half green on the outside, and totally green on the inside, so its taste is almost like vinegar.
I equate this plum’s ripe level of taste with the discovery of true taste of an orange from a friend who lives in Florida and has a backyard orange tree. She raved about the taste of a ripe orange, and finally we got to taste a real orange when we visited. It tasted just as heavenly as she said, and no where near what we got from the store up north.
I always bought my lunch in Elementary school. I think it cost 35 cents. I actually remember seeing Mercury Dimes in my lunch money and thinking I should be saving those, but then I wouldn’t have enough for lunch.

Who doesn’t like plums? When did this start? What junk are people living on if plums are just “nutrition”?

I lived two houses down from my elementary school so I always went home for lunch. Except Wednesdays, that was hamburger day, which I always savored.
