The “War over Water”, also the Battle over Water, refers to a series of confrontations between Israel and its Arab neighbors from November 1964 to May 1967 over control of water sources in the Jordan River drainage basin.
Two groups of people fighting over water rights is the basis of the plot of the 1966 Western film El Dorado, starring John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, James Caan and Edward Asner.
Modern example: In the 50’s the Corps of Engineers dammed up the Chattahoochee river to create the Lake Lanier for hydroelectric power. In the intervening years Atlanta exploded, needing water but the states down stream (Alabama and Florida) claimed 2/3d of the water….big fight in court…went of for over 10 years in various courts including the US Supreme Court. Not sure it has ever ended and probably wont. Nobody is happy…
This strip, dated 23 April 1963, likely refers to a Supreme Court decision that same year. The case regarded water rights between California & Arizona at the Parker Dam, downstream from the Hoover Dam. Arizona nearly did go to war with California over water rights in 1935, when Governor Moeur sent the Arizona National Guard to halt Parker’s construction.
