Our downtown used to be a locally owned and run. It’s been overtaken by restaurants and shops that “look” like local small businesses, but are all owned by hedge funds and whatnot.
I suppose death by book-learning is a worse death than death by disemboweling, as the latter is at least fairly quick by comparison. :P
It’s probably the aliens. They wanted to fix things up before they came down in an armada of saucers and took over.
