Since the first couple of years of college have turned into “remedial high school” — because public school systems aren’t succeeding in their job — the bar for being “prepared” for college is getting lower. By the time kids Gracie’s age are applying for college, the bar will be six inches below the floor…and college costs will be so high, it’ll be unaffordable anyway. These are not sustainable trends.
Back in college after dropping out 15 yrs ago. It’s nuts, there is no memorizing. All my quizzes so far have been open book. One teacher gave the study guide for the first test “if it’s not on this sheet, it wont be on your test”. Of course I was raised with “smarts come with knowing how to read, knowing where to look for the answers and the know how to do the research”
Monkeyhead, that’s called “teaching to the test.” The instructor doesn’t care if you learn anything or not, just if you get good grades on the tests. The most important thing your classmates will ever learn in that class is how to say, “Do you want fries with that?”
TrapperJohn: It isn’t just the ultra-skilled labor like tool and die, it is all skilled labor. And now they are starting in on the professionals too. We are a colony of the non-geographical imperialist nations called multinational corporations. Either get used to being slaves or revolt like Gandhi did. As Harriet Tubman said, “I saved a thousand slaves, but I could have saved a thousand more had they only realized that they were slaves.”
