Tbh they sound like they are overdoing the “being nice”. At least the three are acting natural – instead of pushing some idea of being grown up. At least I´m having a hard time not imagining them speaking with some posh british accent atm. :p
This arc is directed at the kids who read this strip, not us old pharts ! We tend to forget that this bi-lingual comic has a huge Hispanic readership, particularly among young people. The aim of this comic has always been to instruct with humor.
.
If Gracie and her new friend Angel seem a little exaggerated in their speech, it’s because the writers are trying to get across a point to their young readers.
Angel had better be a fellow academic, or he’ll discover that Gracie’s “nice” attitude will soon descend into the usual realms of condescension and rudeness.

If this wasn’t a family strip there would be a lot of expletives in the boys language

the person who commented first must either be totally new to this strip or totally missing the point as to what is going on here.

At least when I went to HS (1970’s) people tended to say nothing but could be nice or not.

It took me a moment to realize that Gracie wasn’t sweet talking Angel. That was his name not a nickname.
