Here in Ecuador, we have two different school schedules. The kids in the mountains – ie. Quito, Cuenca, Loja go to school on a schedule similar to kids in the States.
On the coast, were I live, school starts at the end of April. My grandkids summer vacation is Feb. – April.
Climate has a lot to do with this. It’s winter down here at the moment and it’s rainy and/or snowy and cold in the sierras and most of the schools aren’t heated.
Summer on the coast ( Feb. March & April ) is rainy season with flooding and mudslides, making getting to school difficult, sometimes. Also it’s the hottest time of the year, and schools aren’t air-condotioned, so….
Around here school ends the end of June and starts just after Labor Day – although lately with the need for additional days off to cover more ethnic holidays some schools are looking to open before Labor Day, but it is against most teacher contracts.
I am surprised Baldo would start school in August as summer must be much hotter than the rest of the year.
Merchandise for back to school started showing up at Walmart today – no sales yet. I have always loved back to school time – even when I was in school. I love office and school supplies and can spend lots of time looking through what is there.
Two years ago Walmart had back to school out about 3 weeks before school ended! That was a bit much.
Back to school is the best time to stock up on office supplies. A group I belong to had never had proper office supplies and one back to school I had the fun of buying pencils, pens, clipboard, pads, scissors, plastic boxes and so on. The only season that might be better is Christmas – and I am not sure which is better – when I was a kid I knew that back to school was better and more fun.

The elementary school in our neighborhood starts on August 7—- 4 weeks from now.

One of our local schools puts up the date when school starts back on the sign out front………………….7 days after school lets out.
