If you live in south Texas (or Mexico, I imagine) and don’t spray regularly, palmetto bugs (3" long cockroaches) will be all over your kitchen counter and your dishes every night when the lights are out. They even ate the glue binding my books together.
EL Cucuy te va llevar al bosque y comerte si no te comportas.
The Cucuy will take you to the forest and eat you if you don’t behave.
I am waiting for the new cartoon series “Victor & Valentino” which has loads of Mexican and ancient Indian mythologies. One of the more recent ones was Camazotz,The Nightmare bat god. Sooner or later El Cucuy will show up.
I was raised in a “casual house” where things were not always put away right away (and right now my sisters, their husbands, my husband and I are going through the house as mom can no longer live there and we have to get it all cleared out to sell it and as much of the stuff as we can to pay for her assisted living center). One thing which always done is that the dishes were washed after each meal. If we had a large dinner – holidays or my parents had friends for dinner – the dishwasher would be loaded as each course was finished and when full it would be run – so that at the end of the evening only the final pots and dishes would need to be cleaned at the end of the evening. I did the same when we had people in at our house. now dishes are done immediately after each meal and put away. Keeps ants, mice, etc away.

If El Cucuy doesn’t lick them, La Cucaracha will!

Wouldn’t it just be easier to wash the dishes after el Cucuy licked them?

Although the cartoonist did spell Cucaracha wrong.
