I’m sure psychologists today would not approve of this tactic. It undermines the child’s feelings of security and love.

In this strip, Baldo looks about the age he would have been when Gracie was born, so I guess there’s a sense in which Sergio followed up on the threat.

The two my mom always said was: “You’re under warranty. I’ll return you to the hospital and get a new kid.” or “That spot on your back you can’t reach? That’s your destruct button. Don’t make me press it.”

I’m not enjoying these at all. My parents were honest with us kids and set a good example, as I did with mine later. I don’t get asking for people to share the way their parents lied to them, much less sharing how to.

It wasn’t Dad, but older students.

The school I went to have grades 1 through 12 on the same campus. The High School had a combined Chemistry/Biology lab. Looking through the ground floor windows into this classroom, you could see all the jars with biology specimens preserved in Formaldehyde. Frogs, mice, squirrels and all sorts of unidentifiable critters.

When I was there, the older students used to tell all the First Graders that those specimens were Students who had made the Teachers mad at them and been fed a chemical potion that caused them to Shrink and Shrivel until they would Fit into one of those jars. And, sure enough, each jar had a small card inside it with a person’s Name, a date and something written in Latin. Just like a Tombstone.

One of the things that made the story more Believable was that a Lot of the first Grade students used to transfer out to another school. Of course, all WE knew was that they were Gone one day after being pulled out of class and escorted to the Principal’s office. It’s not like we got to see their Parents leading them away from that office.

Looking back, it’s obvious that the Parents decided that the Private School was too expensive and transferred them to Public school. And most of us lived far enough away that we wouldn’t see them around our neighborhoods afterwards.

My father lost his power over me when he refused to discipline my older brother the bully. My father laughed and said if things are that bad, why don’t you just move out? So, as soon as I could I did.
