Reminds me of Weird Al’s Amish Paradise!

My abuelita on my dad’s side had a gasoline-powered Maytag washer in rural Missouri in the 1940s. We actually named a cat for it because her purr sounded like it running. RIP Amana Maytag S. (1978-1995)

Getting electricity in Mexico was a major issue for years.

At the ranger station where I grew up they ran a generator for three hours in the afternoon. In 1960 we got regular electricity.

I remember visiting cousins — who about 3 miles away — who did not have electricity. This was in the 1960s, in Kentucky but in the same county as Louisville. They had a hand pump in their kitchen. There was a gas heater in the living room; not sure they had any other heat in the house.

I think they could have afforded the electricity itself, but couldn’t afford the money to run the electric wires from the main road to the house.

That IS something to celebrate……

I’ve seen gasoline-powered clothes washers. Also ones that get their power from a tractor engine, with a drive belt between them.

Do Gracie and Baldo have abuelos? I don’t think we ever see them in the comic.
